Welcome to another edition of #AusFIWeekly. You’ll find great handpicked Financial Independence links from Australia and abroad – brought to you by Michelle, a mid-30s semi-retiree sharing my FI adventures at FrugalityandFreedom.com.
I was stoked to spend the last week in the warmth of Darwin, Northern Territory (especially since it was on work’s dime!). It was my first flight since the pandemic saw me rush back home to South Australia from life in NZ – and the longest I’ve gone between trips since 2007. So lovely to explore a new city, with views such as in this picture from Darwin Sailing Club while dining al fresco.
I finally met my remote colleagues in person, after a year of part-time work with them in my new virtual assistant career. It makes such a difference to see people in 3D, complete with legs and torsos beyond their usual Zoom camera boundaries! I’m back home now and looking forward to seeing how our virtual work dynamic shifts after this week of hugs, gossip and drinks…
Now for this week’s financial independence links.

The Life-Changing Magic Of Semi-Retirement – Money Flamingo
“We firmly believe that as a lifestyle, Semi-Retirement beats full retirement (the RE part of FIRE) hands down.”
A Minimalist Approach To Life: 5 Principles I Swear By – Simply + Fiercely
“I believe that minimalism is a state of mind. It’s less about what you own and more about how you think. Owning less stuff is just a byproduct of this new mindset and not the other way around. The advantage of this approach to minimalism is that you transform your life from the inside out. It’s about so much more than having a tidy home and less stuff to clean.”
The Easiest Way To Set And Achieve Your Financial Goals – Frugal and Thriving
“Financial goals give you a sense of purpose and control over your finances as well as financial security… even slow progress is better than no progress. And each new goal has taught me better goal-setting strategies.”
How To Avoid Risk When Investing – Aussie Doc Freedom
“No one can completely avoid risk in investing or life… As with most things, it is not about avoiding risk altogether (it’s impossible) but minimising risk, weighing risks against likely benefits and minimising controllable risks.”

How To Separate Your Self Worth From Your Professional Life – Tis But A Moment (USA)
“One of the most toxic ways you can lose yourself in your work is to not have healthy boundaries. Turn off your phone (or at least your email notifications) after hours. Take your full vacation days. Make weekends dedicated to personal pursuits only.”
The “Great Make Believe” – My Quiet FI (USA)
“We have come to the real meat of our problem as well. When we lose our time, the money side becomes irrelevant. Because what do all the riches in the world mean if you don’t have the time to use and enjoy them? Zilch, nada, zero.”
How To Tackle The Horror That Is Work Dread – The Better Work Guide (USA)
“We’re not talking about the perfectly understandable feeling of wanting another day off work. We’re talking about that creeping feeling where tendrils of work horror increasingly wrap themselves around you as the day goes on, clouding your day and dampening your happiness so much you think “well I might as well just be back at bloody work.” That’s The Dread.”
50 (Short) Rules For Life From The Stoics – Ryan Holiday (USA)
“These rules functioned, then, as now, as guides to what the ancients called ‘the good life.'”
