Welcome to another #AusFIWeekly with handpicked Financial Independence links and events from Australia and abroad. I’m Michelle, a mid-30s semi-retiree sharing my FI journey at FrugalityandFreedom.com
A huge congratulations this week to Money Flamingo for reaching the end of their 1000 day countdown to semi-retirement! Seems this is the month for it, with Adventures from Poopsie also announcing a semi-retirement. Further abroad, my FIREy friend A Purple Life retired at the ripe of’ age of 30. Congrats to all who are celebrating milestones in October – big or small.
It’s motivating to read these inspiring stories! However… I want to give a shout out to everyone who is more “tortoise” than “hare” while running (or strolling) their own race. To those whose financial independence journeys won’t make quick enticing soundbites or snappy click-bait titles, whose FIRE dates are moving targets, or who take one step back for every two steps forward…
I SEE YOU! Be proud and stay true to yourself, your values and ideal life plans. FI(RE) is a “choose your own adventure”, to be enjoyed your own way. As someone who is happier to cruise on that Slow FI lifestyle, I won’t make the news with any early retirement records. But I get satisfaction every day with the many small freedoms I’ve chosen on this intentionally longer journey. Let your “why” be your guide! 🙂 Michelle

What I Think About When I Think About Buying Something Expensive – Wealth & Risk (NZ)
“Education is time-consuming, if not expensive. Ignorance is even more expensive. It’s a pain to buy something expensive only to realise that it is missing some key functionality or that is harder to use than you thought. I do lots of research on the basis that it’s better to suffer pregret than regret.”
The Power of Time Off – TED Talk (US)
“Every seven years, designer Stefan Sagmeister closes his New York studio for a yearlong sabbatical to rejuvenate and refresh their creative outlook. He explains the often overlooked value of time off and shows the innovative projects inspired by his time in Bali.”
Build Personal Moats – Erik Torenberg (US)
“My favorite career advice is to develop a “personal moat.” A personal moat is a set of unique and accumulating competitive advantages in the context of your career. This should be something that’s: Hard to learn and hard to do (but perhaps easier for you); Impossible without rare and/or valuable skills; Unique to your own talents & interests; Legible, in the sense that your expertise should be easy to describe, easy to share, and makes people want to do both for you.”
How To Build Your Financial Freedom Lifestyle Goals – Beyond Pennies (US)
“Understanding what type of lifestyle you want for yourself and your family after achieving financial freedom is one of the most important concepts in building your financial freedom lifestyle goals.”
