Welcome to another #AusFIWeekly with handpicked Financial Independence links and events from Australia and abroad. I’m Michelle, a mid-30s semi-retiree sharing my FI journey at FrugalityandFreedom.com
Here we are in October and the weather is warming up in Adelaide. I’m slowly settling into new routines, after making the pandemic-time career switch from event organiser to virtual assistant/freelance writer. I’ve been experimenting with different productivity tools and systems, to find my ideal work style and keep procrastination (mostly… kinda…) at bay.
My current favourite is “virtual coworking” — for example, I’m writing this on a Zoom video call with twelve other international remote workers, with cycles of 30 minutes’ silent work on our own projects, then hosted social chats during 10 minute breaks. Who would have thought? I’m valuing the accountability and connection to a global community, especially enjoying the different accents from fellow “digital nomads” while we’re grounded from travel for a while.
What are your preferred tools for getting stuff done and managing your to-do lists? Click reply – I’d love to hear them! Now, on to this week’s FI links…

*This* is Why We FI – The Money School
“We can’t plan for everything, but when the proverbial hits the rotating blade, FI simplifies decisions… I wish we had even one more year together, but no amount of time would ever be ‘enough’. These last days will have to do. I guess I can thank FI for those too.”
Perspectives on Retirement – Super Guide
“I frequently meet clients who have recently concluded a high-profile career, yet it hasn’t occurred to them that they may be suffering RDS – relevance deprivation syndrome. In other words, they have a need – carried over from their work life – to be important to others. To resolve this they can either satisfy that need or adapt to living without it, but to be made aware of it is already a step in the right direction.”
My Transition To Retirement Financial Planning Process – Captain FI
“This article explored how I am roughly structuring my finances into three practical phases – FIRE, traditional early retirement and conventional retirement. I looked at the various income sources and began to look at the current financial framework in Australia to work out how I can optimise my finances to produce the best quality of life and highest income stream.”
The Oft Forgotten Value of Doing Absolutely Nothing – FIRE by 35
“So what am I doing instead of my side hustle? Absolutely bloody nothing! I am going to reserve my precious thinking power for my every day job. If I can lock in a measly 1% pay rise at the end of the year, I’ll earn an extra $700 in 2018. To build a side hustle that effective I would have to neglect my sleep, my health and my boyfriend more than I already am.”

The Cash Flow Engine — Why Real Investors Don’t Need The Market To Build Wealth – Mr Tako Escapes (USA)
“While most investors dream about constantly rising stock prices, I believe this to be a very wrongheaded approach to wealth building. As net buyers of stocks over our lifetimes, investors should actually desire lower prices. Returns are higher when prices go lower. This point is lost on many investors drunk on excessive capital appreciation.”
Here’s When You Should Start Actively Investing – The Woke Salaryman (Singapore)
“Suppose it takes 1,000 hours a year to become a decent investor delivering 10% annual returns. Three investors with different portfolios sizes will have very different results for the same effort. $5,000,000 Portfolio -> $500 per hour vs $50,000 Portfolio -> $5 per hour. When your Return on Time exceeds your hourly rate, it’s time to consider active investing.”
Why Intentional Friction Is A Game-Changer – Break the Twitch (USA)
“When our time is being stolen in these spare moments, we don’t fully own our attention. And when we don’t fully own our attention, we’re not directing it towards the things that truly matter to us. And that’s a problem.”
The Financial Independence Journey – Where Do We Go From Here? – Tawcan (Canada)
“While being financially independent is very enticing and appears to be a very magical status, the journey can be extremely boring and repetitive… There are no magic pills. There are no shortcuts… How do you make sure you are engaged and being challenged every day while on the financial independence journey?”
