Welcome to another edition of #AusFIWeekly. It’s Michelle here from FrugalityandFreedom.com, bringing you this regular selection of great financial independence links, news, and events from Australia and beyond.
I’m excited to feature Project Palm Tree as today’s curator. Every two weeks, I welcome a guest from the Australian FI community to select some favourite financial independence links (archives here). Let’s see what he chose…
Hi everyone and welcome to a new week. My name is Shaun and I blog at Project Palm Tree. I love to write about reducing stress, personal finance, and living a life that you love. During the first year of writing this blog, I stumbled across the FIRE movement and it has become an obsession. Being 53 and trying to retire by 60, I definitely fit into the LATE 2 FIRE space.
My favourite part of the blog is my weekly postcard – a newsletter which is only available to subscribers and which I write and publish in 45 minutes every Saturday morning, after my morning meditation. (The latest Post Card is ‘from the Rocket, Man’ – about an English chap about to retire: Sir Elton John.)
I have compiled a bunch of blog posts that I have read recently that really resonated with me. I hope that you enjoy them.

Financial Independence – The most bitter pill of all – Burning Desire for FIRE
One of my greatest motivations for reaching financial independence is having the physical ability, as well as the motivation to do the things that I wish I was doing instead of sitting at my desk every day. Walking the Cinque Terre in Italy (again) or, more audaciously, walking the Camino de Santiago.
I’m lucky to be reasonably fit for someone in their 50s. But fitness now is no guarantee of continued health! Read this post for the motivation you need to reach financial freedom with the level of health you need to truly enjoy it!
Joyfulgiving366 – Day 59 – The Lego house and food writing – The Joyful Frugalista
I intentionally live in a small apartment. It allows me to live close to the centre of the city. It also makes it easier to eliminate ‘stuff’. So this story and finding out about the green shed was great – I just wish I knew where there was something like it in Sydney.
Starting late to FI? Start with your net worth – Latestarterfire
I recently read ‘The Millionaire Next Door’ by Thomas J. Stanley & William D. Danko where they challenge you to look at your net worth based on where you should be for your age which is really confronting. The beauty of this post by Latestarterfire is how she makes it much simpler to understand what net worth is, how to work out what yours is and what broadly you need to do to improve it (and why you should).
I am joining the LATE 2 FIRE movement, late – Project Palm Tree
Most people join the LATE 2 FIRE movement in their 40s with an aim to retire by 50 or 55.
Not me! I set off down this path at the age 52. Clearly, I won’t be retiring at age 35, but I aim to reach Financial Independence by age 60 and have the option to Retire Early compared to the traditional age for men to retire in Australia which is 67.

Saving for Retirement: Interview #2 with Becky Heptig – Baby Boomer Super Saver (US)
Becky is a baby boomer who found herself in the uncomfortable position of having too little retirement savings. Find out how she and her husband successfully turned their financial situation around by making some strategic changes.
The Beauty of Minimalism – The Escape Artist (UK)
I love minimalism. I live it to a pinch, but within reason. I enjoyed the Minimalism documentary and even saw its creators Josh and Ryan (aka The Minimalists) when they performed here in Sydney, 2019. Read The Escape Artist’s take on the benefits of this movement.
Why It’s Not Too Late to Join the FIRE Movement – Firewalkers (US)
While most members of the FIRE community are in their 20’s, 30’s and 40’s, there is growing interest in FIRE from people in their 50’s and 60’s. They see potential in applying practices that enable younger people to achieve FI in as few as 10 years!
Assignment: Retirement – What Will YOUR Retirement Look Like? – Kristen Edens (US)
Have you written a note to yourself outlining what you want your future to look like? Whether it is retirement-based or not – DO IT NOW!
