Welcome to the first edition of #AusFIWeekly for 2020! It’s Michelle here from FrugalityandFreedom.com, bringing you this regular selection of great financial independence links, news, and events from Australia and beyond.
I’m pleased to introduce this week’s guest curator, Miss B from All About Balance. Check out these handpicked posts to round-up 2019 and surge ahead towards 2020 goals. Over to you…
Hi there! I’m Miss B, a 30-year-old Sydney-sider who is keen to create a life where I don’t have to stress about money. I share my story at All About Balance; this mostly looks like tips and tricks on saving, investing, and growing your income while maintaining strong relationships and a healthy body and mind. I’m all about reaching financial independence while still having a life now.

Exposed – The Money Flamingo Household’s 2019 (and 2018!) spending! – Money Flamingo
Whilst some say you shouldn’t compare, I love a good sneak peek into how other people spend their money, especially rounded out over a year. I was extra happy to come across this post as the Flamingo crew rarely share numbers. Living in the same city as me and having recently had baby Flamingo, this is like a sneaky look into what my future could hold.
There Lies the Port: Year in Review and Monthly Portfolio Update December 2019 – The FI Explorer
Equally as interesting as seeing spending reports are looking at portfolio updates. I find it super inspiring to see those further down the path than I continue to grow.

2020 New Year Goals and Resolutions – Retireby40 (US)
Someone who retired at 38 must have done something right. If you need some more inspiration for setting some goals for 2020 that may well lead you down the RE path, check out this post by RB40.
Why the secret to success is setting the right goals – TED Talk by John Doerr (US)
While we don’t all run a multinational business, this basic goal-setting system can be adopted by each of us to ensure a combination of passion and purpose are behind the goals you set.
“In this practical talk, Doerr shows us how we can get back on track with “Objectives and Key Results,” or OKRs — a goal-setting system that’s been employed by the likes of Google, Intel and Bono to set and execute on audacious goals.”
The Value of Setting Mid-Term Goals – Four Pillar Freedom (US)
After you’ve looked at 1 year goals for 2020, you might want to start thinking about your mid-term goals, those that you hope to achieve in the next 3-5 years. “These type of goals are useful because they’re long enough to make significant progress while short enough that your values and priorities won’t be dramatically different by the time you achieve the goal.”
What if we quit setting goals? (Seriously?) – Paula Pant, Afford Anything (US)
If none of the above resonates with you at all, check out this post from Paula who asks the bold question, “What if goal-setting itself is the problem?” and provides 3 alternatives to the traditional model of goal setting.
