Hi! Michelle here from FrugalityandFreedom.com, bringing you the latest #AusFIWeekly. Each edition is a handpicked selection of great financial independence links, news, and events from Australia and beyond.
This week, I’m in Wellington helping out on the 7in7 Digital Nomad Conference. The event is being held on 7 continents in 7 years… yes, that means Antarctica in 2022! I was excited to learn more about location-independent work and hear stories from digital nomads building freedom into their lives this way.
I’m looking forward to remote work and freelancing as I travel next year – using my skills in event planning, tour coordination, social media management, and writing. (Need help with these? Hit me up!)
Bonus: I’ve been housesitting for free accomm and earning by taking photos on JobSpotter app while in town. What are your creative ways to save money while travelling? Let me know.

Create A Life You Don’t Need To Escape From (It’s A Process) – Radical FIRE
“‘True self-care is not bath salts and chocolate cake, it’s making the choice to build a life you don’t need to escape from’ – Brianna Wiest. Your goal should be to take good care of yourself at the moment AND work towards your long term goals. This quote reminds me that we should all aim to create a life we enjoy. If that feels impossible to you right now, aim to create a life that you don’t hate.”
I Retired at 38. Here’s What I Didn’t Expect. – Tanja Hester, The Cut

Why We Should Stop Celebrating Consumerism – Joshua Becker, Forbes
“We applaud success—and we should. It is entirely appropriate to champion those who develop their talents, work hard, and overcome obstacles… But somewhere along the way, we also began celebrating consumerism—a preoccupation with and an inclination toward the buying of consumer goods… (We) celebrate the lives of those who seem to have it all. But we are making a big mistake. Success and consumeristic excess are not the same.”
Financial Independence Will Not Set You Free – Darius Foroux
“Once you no longer have to worry about paying the bills, the more money you earn will not make you feel any different. Sure, you won’t have money problems anymore, but you will still have human problems.”
