Hello! It’s Michelle here from FrugalityandFreedom.com, bringing you the latest #AusFIWeekly. Each edition is a handpicked selection of great financial independence links, news, and events from Australia and beyond.
I’m pleased to introduce this week’s guest curator: Latestarterfire! Take it away…
Hi, I’m Latestarterfire from Melbourne, a late 40s woman who discovered FIRE last year. I write about my struggles and wins as a way to be accountable; and add an ‘older’ voice to the FIRE community.
I am grateful that blogging has allowed me to connect with so many people on the same path, though we may start from different stages of our lives. I have learnt so much from all of you.
Thank you, Michelle, for giving me this opportunity to guest curate. You are so good at building community wherever you go, from the US to now from NZ.*

Why 40s is the PERFECT time to pursue FIRE – Latestarterfire
“I am not sure that I would have embraced the FIRE philosophy in my twenties – I was too absorbed in living the good life whilst working very hard in my career. Now, in my late forties, having lived many experiences from travelling around the world to starting my own business, I am ready to dive into FIRE.”
Start From Where You Are – Burning Desire For FIRE
“I don’t mind telling you, I was scared. Very scared. I was on my own, with no partner’s income and knowledge to smooth the ride. Any decision, or lack of decision, that I made could possibly have huge ramifications for Future Frogdancer down the track. It was paralysing, to tell the truth.”
2019-20 Savings Rate Challenge – FIRE for One
“I’ve been thinking lately about how I might achieve FI, given that I’m starting so late in life. All the reading I’ve been doing of other FIRE blogs has provided a lot of food for thought. Ultimately, though, I have two basic choices – reduce my spending or increase my income.”
Episode 4: Money, Shopping and Investing with Miss B from All About Balance – This Abundant Life podcast
“Miss B: For every year I save 50% of my income, I can take a year off. I’ve seen some lightbulb moments when I explain it that way to people.”

Think You’re Too Old to Reach Financial Independence? Think Again – FI after 50 (US)
“People my age just starting on the FI journey have reached a point in life where we don’t want – and don’t have time – to sacrifice for the next 15 years to reach financial independence. I don’t want to eat ramen or sell my car or give up occasional dinners out or trips to New York City. Life is short, and I want to live it well, now.”
5 Ways Being an Immigrant Positively Influences my Path to FI – Fimigrant (US)
“I looked different, sounded different, and eating the skin of mangoes didn’t help with trying not to be weird (grandma always said that’s where the vitamins were!) Being different comes along with being foreign. Making choices that are against the norm as we prioritize getting our finances in order is just one more stripe on the zebra.”
Why I’ll Never Tell You To Stop Buying Your Latte – Sunday Brunch Cafe (US)
“When it comes to money; shame, guilt, lack, deprivation are pervasive emotions. Finance advisors, experts, bloggers are making their money selling you inadequacy. They tell us we are spending our money wrong. To stop buying that latte! But when is a latte not a latte?”
The Shockingly Simple Math Behind Slow FI – Four Pillar Freedom (US)
“Perhaps you should prioritise how enjoyable your journey to financial independence is rather than prioritising how fast you can get there.”
Thanks again to Latestarterfire for this week’s thoughtfully crafted selection.

Thank you so much for the mentioning! I really appreciate it and I will be checking out the other articles too 🙂 looks like awesome content!
You are very welcome, Jaimee! Your post resonated with me, being a migrant to Australia – I love that we can all learn from each other’s life experiences and how these experiences influence our journey to FI
A great perspective, Jaimee. Love how you pointed out that being an immigrant gives you a “head start on being different”, so you can ride along with that “strangeness” and exercise your frugal ways more easily.
